New £5 notes are now selling on eBay for hundreds of pounds, but only if they have a low serial number.

Collectors have been bidding through the online auction site for £5 notes starting with number AA01. These notes are apparently worth much more than your average fiver!

A quick search on eBay brought up lots of listings of £5 notes many with numerous bids, some over £100.

Financial website This is Money found a couple of notes which had sold for £196 after 24 bids, and £228 after 23 bids.

440 million new £5 notes have been printed, of which one million have the prefix AA01. However of those, only 999,999 are in circulation because the first one, AA01 000001, was given to the Queen!

The new £5 note was introduced for a number of reasons, including increased security and durability.

Last year, over 21,000 notes were replaced due to damage, the new polymer design is said to last up to 2.5 times longer than the paper version.

Time to check your pockets!
