A survey conducted by Rightmove has revealed that the happiest places to live are on the coast.

Essex's Leigh-on-Sea and Scotland's Troon in South Ayrshire were voted the first and second happiest places to live in Great Britain, whilst third place was awarded to the historic market town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire.

In total 206 areas were ranked with none of the major cities making it into the top ten. However London borough Richmond Upon Thames was ranked the happiest area within London (39th nationally) whilst the capital was also home to the unhappiest area - Barking and Dagenham.

Almost 24,000 people took part in the survey which asked residents about 12 factors in their local area. These factors included how friendly their neighbours are to how good the local services are.
