10 moments from 90's movies that made us cry
Tissues at the ready...
The 90's was a great decade for films but also for heartbreaking moments. We've put together 10 of the saddest moments. Tissues at the ready...
1. Armageddon (1998) A group of drillers led by Harry (Bruce Willis) are asked to fly into space and detonate a bomb to destroy an asteroid headed for Earth.
Why it's sad There were a few lovable characters who met an untimely demise but none more so than protagonist Harry who saved his daughter's fiance's life and the entire world by sacrificing himself.
2. My Girl (1991) This film depicts the coming-of-age of a young girl, Vada, who faces many different emotional highs and lows. Her best friend is Thomas who is allergic to everything.
Why it's sad It was desperately sad to see Thomas, played by Macaulay Culkin, get stung by bees and die after going to retrieve Vada's mood ring and the funeral scene was just as upsetting.
3. The Lion King (1994) A Disney classic, Simba is cast out of his pride by his cruel uncle Scar who convinces him he's killed his own father. Simba grows up in the Savannah and makes some hilarious friends in Timon and Pumba who help him overthrow his uncle and take his place as rightful leader of the price.
Why it's sad It may be the 'circle of life' but we were devastated when Mufasa is killed by his brother. These kids films definitely can be heartbreakers...
4. The Sixth Sense (1999) "I see dead people." The film tells the story of Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), who is able to see and talk to the dead. Bruce Willis plays the troubled child psychologist who tries to help him.
Why it's sad It was sad to watch Bruce's character struggle with growing distant from his wife and remembering how he failed another little boy, without then having to find out he has actually been (SPOILER ALERT) dead all along. We can't share the clip but we're sure you've seen it by now.
5. Ghost (1990) Patrick Swayze plays a murdered man who must find a way to protect his girlfriend (Demi Moore) from beyond the grave.
Why it's sad It's sad when Sam dies and even more heartbreaking when it's time to really leave.
6. The Green Mile (1999) The film stars Tom Hanks as Paul Edgecomb and Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey and follows Paul's life as a death row corrections officer and the supernatural events he witnessed.
Why it's sad John Coffey didn't commit the crime he was accused of and the staff love him, however he still needs to be put to death, making this scene that much more heartbreaking.
7. Stepmom (1998) Jackie, played by Susan Sarandon, is angry to find she has been replaced with a much younger woman Isabel (Julia Roberts).
Why it's sad The two women come together when Jackie is diagnosed with terminal cancer and gives Isabel her blessing to help raise her children.
8. Titanic (1997) This epic is based on the real life sinking of the Titanic, and features the fictional story of Rose who is wealthy, and Jack who is not. They fall in love quickly but unfortunately being from different backgrounds is the least of their worries after hitting a massive iceberg.
Why it's sad “I’ll never let go, Jack!” Except Rose did, she let go of Jack all the way to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. We've also rewatched this and we're sure she could have just moved up...
9. Edward Scissorhands (1990) Johnny Depp plays a man with scissors for hands who lives alone until he is taken in by a kind family.
Why it's sad It starts well with Edward cutting hair and hedges but unfortunately he is soon run out of town due to fear and jealousy from the community. Relive the magical snowy moment when Edward makes snow for his love, Kim.
10. Romeo and Juliet (1996) The classic story of Romeo and Juliet, set in a modern-day city of Verona Beach. The film used dialogue from Shakespeare's play of star-crossed lovers but was set in modern times, seeing swords replaced with guns.
Why it's sad Leo dies again. Everytime we watch this we urge Juliet, (Claire Danes) to just SAY SOMETHING and stop Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) drinking that poison so they can live happily ever after. Alas she doesn't and in the end decides to join him in death.
We need a hug now after watching these!
