There's a warning from the government that if you don't fill out your census this Sunday you could be fined £1,000. Every household in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is supposed to complete the form on Sunday 21st March.

Since completing the census is required by law, not doing so could result in serious consequences including a £1,000 fine and a criminal record.

It's being carried out online for the first time this year, but you'll need a code that you will have received in the post.

What is the census?

The census has taken place every 10 years since 1801 and aims to identify and count the number of people and households in a certain area.

Each household is required to fill out a questionnaire, providing details on age, race, occupation and relationship status for every person who lives at that address.

It helps the Government to understand how the population lives and works and in turn shapes decisions on policy and how funding is allocated.

How do I complete the census?

For the first time ever, the 2021 census is being completed online.

You can access your online census via a code you will have received in the post.

If you do not want to complete the census online, you can request a paper copy to complete by hand.

All households in England, Wales and Northern Ireland should complete their census by Sunday 21st March or as soon as possible following this date.

People living in Scotland will not be required to carry out a census until 2022.

The census should take approximately 10 minutes for the household questions plus 10 minutes per person for each member of the household.
