Our favourite Valentine's and First Date traditions for 14th February

These are our big tips for the big day!

Valentine’s Day is usually a date reserved for existing couples, not for two people who have only recently met. So, to help you out we’ve put together a list of old school Valentine’s & First Date traditions that you should certainly adopt on your quest for love.

1. Going to the door to pick someone up

We’ve all had that unromantic “here” text, and meeting up always seems to be more casual than romantic. Meeting someone online would probably be the exception to this rule, but generally, the 30 seconds it takes to get out of a car or taxi and knock on the door makes a huge difference.

2. Dressing up for a date

Dressing up means different things to different people, so we think it’s just a matter of putting a bit of effort in before going out with someone. It’s not about wearing petticoats and suits again, but just realizing that appearance does count for something, and you should do your best to make sure that your appearance says something about you, in whatever way you’d like it to.

3. Giving flowers or other tokens of affection

Many lucky ladies (and some men) get this regularly, but only ever with people they’ve been dating for a while. We think there’s something to be said for bringing flowers. It’s become unpopular because it’s forward, but we should definitely get past that idea and worry more about letting someone know how we care and appreciate that they want to spend time with us.

4. Going dancing

Whatever happened to this? Dancing for the sake of dancing. What better way to literally shake off nerves, than to see your date bust a move on the dance floor? The art of slow dancing has generally been lost, though it’s said on numerous occasions it can be one of the most romantic nights you can have together.

5. Romantic gestures like writing poems

Writing poems may not be for you – we know ours would look something like “Roses are red, violets are blue, I can’t write poetry but I love you.” But 9 times out of 10, they work! Even a handwritten letter in the post or just surprising them with something you made is cute, just because you tried and were thinking of them.

6. Turning electronics off and just being with each other

We're not sure there is anything worse than the person who picks up their phone in the middle of dinner, or at any point while you’re together and having a conversation. We're not anti-technology here, but are saying that there comes a time to turn it off, disconnect and remember what actually matters: each other.
