Cyndi Lauper on the importance of her song 'True Colours'

Cyndi Lauper joined Emma B on Magic Radio to talk about her 'Farewell' tour, the brand new documentary Let The Canary Sing, her upcoming Glastonbury performance, and the importance for her 1986 hit 'True Colours'.

The singer, who will be performing her first set at Glastonbury since 2016, told Emma B that she's looking forward to taking to the Pyramid Stage on Saturday afternoon. She told Emma: "I've got a good outfit!" but when Emma asked if she'll have an outfit change, she explained: "It's a short set, you're not allowed (an outfit change)."

Cyndi started her career way back in the 80s, something which is documented in her brand new documentary called Let The Canary Sing. The documentary is named after a judge's proclamation following a lawsuit more 40 years ago, after Cyndi decided to go solo, leaving the band Blue Angel.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, Cyndi had hit after hit, including songs like 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun', 'Time After Time', 'I Drove All Night', and 'True Colours'.

'True Colours' was released in 1986, and has become a popular anthem with the gay community. The singer explained to Emma about the importance of the song to her, an how she found out what it meant to so many people.

"By the time I really started to answer letters (fan mail), I was pregnant with my son in '97," Cyndi explained.

"And that's when everything started to settle, and I was reading them online, and that's when I started reading all the letters about 'True Colours'. And I never realised before what it meant, you know, like that.

"And their people felt so disenfranchised that talked about getting fired from their jobs, losing their friends, their families, and I always hated that, 'fit that round peg in the square hole no matter what', so, you know. When I saw these emails I called my sister Ellen and I said 'You know, we should do something', and I read them to her, and she said: 'Absolutely'.

"And then we started with 'P flags stay close', to you and your family, because you know, you always have to stick up for when you know something is wrong, that became the charge!"
