Hold onto your hats people, because Shrek 5 is officially happening, a massive 14 years after the last instalment; Shrek Forever After. In even more exciting news, we now know exactly when we can expect the film, with DreamWorks confirming the news!

When is Shrek 5 out?

DreamWorks have now confirmed Shrek 5 will land on 1st July 2026.

Sharing the news on X, DreamWorks Animation also confirmed Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles. The post read: 'Not too Far, Far Away…@Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz'. (sic)

Speaking to Collider last month, Eddie Murphy, who voices the character of Donkey in the movies, confirmed filming started earlier this year, also adding there's going to be a separate Donkey movie for fans to look forward to.

He said: "We started doing Shrek 4 or 5 months ago.

"I recorded the first act and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey movie."

When Eddie was asked if the two movies were being made at the same time, he added: "No, not at the same time. I started recording Shrek, I think it's coming out in 2025, and we're doing a Donkey one next."

Despite a 2026 release date now being confirmed, it was also rumoured back in November last year that the movie would land in 2025.

As reported by Mail Online, an intern at NBC Universal said that the highly-anticipated film would be hitting cinemas in 2025 in a now-deleted LinkedIn post. In the post, Shrek 5 was cited as one of the films that will be coming out that year.

However, we now know it will infact be July 2026.

Who is in the cast?

It's now been confirmed that Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) will all return for the fifth movie.

Illumination boss Chris Meledandri has previously spoken about the fifth movie.

Speaking to Variety at an event to celebrate the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Chris said of Shrek 5: "It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with Mario, where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honour those core elements.

"And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that."

He added: "We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return."

Other stars to voice characters in the first four movies include John Lithgow, Conrad Vernon, Christopher Knights, Antonio Banderas, and Walt Dohrn, but there's no word yet if they will return for Shrek 5.
