EXCLUSIVE: Will Young speaks out on the importance of Pride
He’s joined us for a special show
Will Young has exclusively spoken to Magic Radio about the importance of Pride and the impact it has had on his life ahead of his appearance on Magic: PRIDE tonight at 7pm.
Talking to Alice Arnold for our special edition Pride programme, the singer said, "My first memory of Pride was seeing it from a friends flat before I had come out. I remember thinking it still seemed such a faraway land to get to, because I didn’t know anyone who was gay.
"Then I saw this joyous parade of people coming through? It was the first sign that I’d really, en masse, that I had seen potential new family of people". He went on to say there was a "uniqueness and beauty in it".
Discussing whether it is important for public figures to reveal their sexuality, Will commented, "I think to come out and be comfortable with your sexuality as a public figure can be very powerful and can spread way beyond how one could think it’s spreading. You know you just don’t know who is going to be reading the interview or seeing you on TV and seeing that everything is okay.
"I think that is one of the most important thing is that everything is okay, because I think when you are young you just don’t think it’s going to be okay. But of course it is and to see people who are thriving and happy and successful in any field that they are successful in, you know is a really inspiring thing".
And Will revealed he was overwhelmed with emotion after finding out gay marriage had finally been legalised in 2014.
He said, "I don’t think I thought it was ever going to happen. The idea of marriage? The idea of having children? You know when I knew I was gay at a very young age that was it. I was just like I won’t get married, I won’t have children".
As Alice concluded, "We have come a long way", Will agreed saying, "Yeah, we have".
You can catch Will on our Magic: PRIDE tonight at 7pm!
