Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters have been tackling a fire at a flat above a shop on High Road in Chadwell Heath, that's left a child needing hospital treatment.

London Fire Brigade said soon after 4am on Sunday (1 December) that the whole of the roof and most of two flats on the first floor were alight.

Three people left the building before the brigade arrived. They were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews for smoke inhalation.

The brigade's control officers took the first call at 4.06am, and mobilised crews from Ilford, Dagenham, Romford, Hainault and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

The flames were brought under control at around 7.30am.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

Local bus services have been diverted.
