Cameron Mackintosh confirms that Phantom of the Opera has "permanently" closed in London
The West End show has been a part of the West End since 1986.
Theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh has revealed that he and Andrew Lloyd Webber have made the decision to close the long running musical Phantom of the Opera.
The Lloyd Webber show has been a staple on the West End having remained resident at Her Majesty's Theatre since 1986.
In an article he penned for the Evening Standard last week Mackintosh said: "Andrew and I have had to sadly permanently had to shut down our London and UK touring productions of The Phantom of the Opera, but are determined to bring it back to London in the future."
This is just the latest in many tragedies that have befallen the West End lately thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
Early closures, postponements and cancelled shows have been commonplace in recent months but theatre fans will certainly be shocked to hear of the closure of one of the most successful musicals in West End history.
Let's hope the Phantom returns to Her Majesty's theatre in the not so distant future!
