The river banks of the Witham in Fiskerton are being worked on today to better monitor the risk of flooding should a breach take place, after the weather this week deteriorated the verges.

In the village, there's a slippage of 50 meters at the riverside, with two areas still at risk of collapse.

A total of 70 homes were evacuated because of the risk of flooding, but it's hoped that they may be able to return with special measures if this work is carried out.

Chief Inspector Steve Williamson from Lincolnshire Police tells us more about the situation:

"We're going to have officers within the village, that'll be speaking with locals as they have been over the last week. We'll keep open the Fiskerton village hall as an information centre - that'll be open over the weekend between 10:00 and 14:00 to provide the most up to date information.

"Meanwhile our colleagues at the Environment Agency are carrying out extra work to understand what has happened on the bank, and to get some systems in place to give us early warnings, so that people can feel as confident as possible."

He added that advise at this time is still to stay away:

"We're still advising people to remain away from the properties and those that have already evacuated, we're asking them to remain away as well. But those people that have chosen to remain at their home address, we're asking them to be vigilant and to keep checking social media and the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum website.

"The reason at the moment that we don't want people to come back is because we're undertaking a lot more work to investigate what the issues are. We just want to keep the people of Fiskerton as safe as we possibly can."
