It's been years in the planning and now work has officially begun on Lincoln's Western Growth corridor project.

It's one of the biggest development projects ever undertaken in the city.

It will see over 3 thousand houses built, create hundreds of jobs and it's hoped will attract investment of around 5 hundred million into the city.

We will look to put mitigation measures in for traffic problems

Yesterday the first spade went into soil to mark the project's start.

There are concerns about the amount of disruption it'll mean for motorists though.

Naomi Tweddle is a City of Lincoln Councillor for economic growth and says they are doing their best to minimise the disruption.

"We have smart traffic lights and smart cameras designed to keep traffic flowing and I think on the whole that has been successful but we are aware there has been some pinch points."

"What I will say is we really urge local residents where that does happen to inform us because where we will put mitigation in."

She told us it'll deliver huge benefits to the city.

"We're also going to develop sustainable transport links through the Western Growth Corridor offer, improve green space, offer landscaping."

Many local parties really want to make something happen

"We hope there'll be a bridge built over the railway as part of the project which is a huge infrastructure project."

David Chambers is chairman of the Lindum Group which is involved in the project.

He told us: " I hope it will bring enormous benefits to a lot of people, it's going to take awhile and they'll be problems with traffic initially, especially when school starts."

"But I think overall there are some interested local parties looking to make something happen."

"The benefits this time next year will be that we'll start the housing site and we'll have people starting to look at houses that are being built and they'll say there are houses there for us to live in and that's worth some of the wait."
