It's been just over a week since earthquakes hit Syria and Turkey, leaving devastating impacts on communities across the world.

We've been speaking to the University of Lincoln Multi-faith Chaplaincy Co-Ordinator who's telling us people in Lincolnshire have been affected too.

"He told me we met 2 Syrian families who have lost ten plus family members,"

Subash Chellaiah tells us the impact it's had:

"I met about a dozen of students who said hearing the news, made them very anxious and some said they have been affected by the earthquake... one has lost members of family in dwellings and so we are doing all we can to help and support them, and in a situation like this, it can really affect a person.

"The people who are affected by the disaster, and I mean directly affected, you know, aren't just necessarily the students even, wider communities are affected. Through the local mosque, I heard my friend mentioned that there are families in Lincoln who are affected. One of the families have lost, I think about 10 family members. It was very sad."

He tells us that the university are offering support:

"There is a lot of support available at the university and if there's students or staff who are affected, they can approach certain well-being centres and they will be really looked after, and those who are, you know, going through a personal crisis there is also a phone number, you can ring, 01522 837 080 or they can drop in at the Student Support Centre. There is safe space available on campus if they want to come and use utilize the safe space. Sometimes all you need is just to be on your own, reflect and if you want to shed your tears or be by yourself, there is in a safe space available on campus.

"I also met with students, and we kind of connected by offering them support. If you're affected by this disaster, please, utilize the support available and reach out."

A vigil is planned for those students and communities affected and will be held at the University of Lincoln at midday today. Any donations or items given are being passed on to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts in the areas that need it most.
