Number of farmers across Lincolnshire and Newark count the cost of wildfires

Many farmers across Lincolnshire and Newark are now counting the cost of the heatwave after a series of wildfires destroyed crops and land.

The fire services in Lincolnshire, Humberside and Nottinghamshire saw the number of callouts on Monday and Tuesday at levels around 3 times what they would normally be.

It meant significant amounts of farm land across the region were damaged.

We spoke to Barry Roberts who lets his fields to farmers including at Elton Park Farms near Newark.

The farm there saw major damage.

He told us: "It was a very first class crop of wheat and the area will be measurable that will create that value but what value we can put on the hedgerows and trees we don't know yet."

"It's taken about 15 hectares of best quality wheat, it will take years to restore hedgerows they'll have to be renewed".

"The trees, that's very concerning because that was personal to me, my late father set them."

"Whether they can be saved or not I don't know."

"It's one of those things we could do nothing about, it's happened to a lot of people and it's the weather that's caused it."

"We've had no rain to mean anything since the middle of May so everywhere is tinder box dry."

The good news is no one was injured".

"All nearby houses were evacuated whilst the fire services did their work."
