Newark man jailed after choking woman
His victim managed to escape and ask for help from two members of the public
A Newark man has been jailed for dragging a woman from a chair and choking her earlier this year.
40 year old Michael McDonnell, of London Road in Balderton, attacked his victim on 17 July 2021 at around 6:10pm.
The victim lost consciousness and attempted to call the police, before McDonnell threw her phone away.
But she was later able to escape and alert two members of the public. She was left with soreness to her neck, finding it difficult to swallow or talk.
McDonnell appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on 29 September 2021 to plead guilty to actual bodily harm.
He will spend 18 months behind bars and has been made subject to a restraining order.
Detective Constable James Newton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“This was a horrifying incident for the victim which left her feeling vulnerable and struggling to talk.
“McDonnell is now behind bars and I hope this jail term will give him chance to think about his actions and the impact they have had on the victim especially emotionally."
