A project in Grimsby is looking to work with schools to secure qualifications for teenagers after success in cutting anti social behaviour.

The East Marsh has a history of problems but an after school club run by the YMCA is making a major difference by putting on activities.

It's seen 2 hundred youngsters sign up since it launched last summer and Humberside Police are supporting the initiative.

If they get detention they know they'll miss youth club

It's also worked with schools to help the young people involved.

Sarita Karir from the YMCA helps organise the project.

She told us: "We're talking with schools with children who have a part timetable and finish their day at say 12 and perhaps they can come here to us."

"They don't want to get a detention at school because if they do they'll miss youth club."

"When young people feel invisible and unheard that's when problematic things start to happen in their lives."

We are honoured to be contacted by schools if kids are struggling

"When they come here we hear them and see them and whether it's pool or crochet they like doing, or serving the drinks it's that stuff we nourish and pick up on."

"We are really honoured to get contacted by schools with kids that are struggling."

"When they have meetings with leaders they're talking about youth club and how they enjoy coming to youth club and we're being invited to those meetings to see if we can play a part in getting them back to school."

It's a safe space for young people

Meanwhile the police said:

"Officers in our Neighbourhood Policing Teams, like PCSO Marc Ireland, embed themselves in their communities."

"Places like YMCA Humber help provide a safe space for youths who might be at risk of exploitation or crime to have the opportunity to enjoy their childhood, all while learning new skills."
