Calls for all school-busses to be fitted with seat-belts after double decker came off road near Lincoln
60 children were trapped onboard last week near North Hykeham
There are now calls for all school-busses to be fitted with seat-belts after a double decker came off the road near Lincoln, trapping 60 children onboard.
A week on from the incident near North Hykeham, which saw two pupils admitted to hospital, and families are calling for action to stop it happening again.
Jim Ronan's granddaughters, who are 11 and 15 years old, were on the bus.
"The fact it wasn’t more serious was sheer luck.
"If that bus had gone 100 yards further on, it would have fallen over into the field because there isn’t a hedge there.
"There’s a tree 100 yards further up, it could have hit that.
"Just past the tree it all goes flat and it would have tipped straight over, without shadow of a doubt, that’s what would have happened and then god knows what we’d be looking at.
"It’s just sheer luck that there wasn’t any serious injuries and not to the fact that seatbelts were there, or weren’t there, but I think if seatbelts had been there, it would have helped.
"I’m fearing for the future."
Stagecoach said safety is their absolute priority.
"All of the services we operate meet relevant safety regulations.
"In addition, this particular service meets the specification and policy set by Lincolnshire County Council for carrying secondary school students."
