Volunteers at a Grimsby food bank have been left shocked after a small number of people have turned up for parcels, despite not needing the service.

The Rock Foundation checks users benefits and income to make sure food parcels go to the right people and found some were coming who were 'in no way in a crisis.'

They are currently giving out between 400 to 500 parcels every single week.

Last March they were giving out around 300 a week, this number peaked in October, but since then, the number of parcels handed out weekly has come down.

However, a minority of people have tried to exploit the foodbank and access a parcel when they are 'in no way in a crisis.'

"They ought to be in some of those people's shoes and see what it's really like to be in poverty."

Pam Hodge from the food bank said:

"I really am disgusted.

"They ought to be in some of those people's shoes and see what it's really like to be in poverty.

"It's awful that you get these individuals who try to do this, it's really, really sad.

"We are very hot that we do check benefits and income and we do find out the reason behind why they are needing a food parcel, so it goes to those who genuinely need it, and those who do genuinely need it, we see if there's other ways we can help them as well."

Staff have also received abuse when turning these people away, Pam continued:

"Sometimes it's been very abusive, we have them kicking off and they call us all sorts of things, it's not very nice at times."

However, Pam and the volunteers are continuing their hard work to help those who are in need. As well as food parcels, they give out coats and gloves to keep people warm and signpost them on to places to get help.
