Following the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 on Thursday 8th September, Premier League, WSL, EFL and FA officials have now confirmed this weekend's scheduled fixtures have been postponed.

Is the Premier League postponed due to the Queen's death?

The Premier League confirmed that all games scheduled for Gameweek 7 have been postponed, with an official statement saying: 'At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

'To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.'

Is the EFL postponed due to the Queen's death?

After it had already been confirmed that the scheduled games for Friday 9th September had been postponed, EFL officials have now confirmed all games scheduled game in the EFL Championship, EFL League One, and EFL League Two have also been postponed.

The EFL (English Football League) said in a statement: 'Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

'This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

'Further information, in respect of how football, Clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point.

'Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.'

Is the Women's Super League postponed due to the Queen's death?

The Women's Super League was due to kick off the 22/23 campaign on Saturday 10th September, with record attendances expected up and down the country, due to the success of the Lionesses over the Summer.

However, following the sad news, WSL officials have now confirmed the opening weekend of fixtures have been postponed out of respect.

Is any football going ahead this weekend following the Queen's death?

On Friday 9th September, The FA released an official statement to confirm all football scheduled to take place across England between 9-11 September has been postponed.

The statement read: 'As a mark of respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, English football has united to postpone all football fixtures this weekend.

All grassroots football across England has also been postponed, with The FA saying: 'We can also confirm that all football across the National League System (NLS), Steps 1-6, including the Vanarama National Leagues, the Women's Football Pyramid (WFP), Tiers 3-7, and matches across grassroots football in England will also be postponed'.

Is Scottish football postponed following the Queen's death?

The Scottish Football Association also announced the postponement of all professional games over the course of the weekend.

Why did Thursday night's football games go ahead following the Queen's death?

Thursday (8th September) night's Europa League and Europa Conference League games for both Arsenal, West Ham and Manchester United all went ahead due to the timing of the Queen's passing.

Due to an early kick-off, Arsenal and Zurich took part in a minute's silence before kicking off the second half at Kybunpark in Switzerland.

A minute's silence in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was also observed at The London Stadium and Old Trafford, ahead of their games against FCSB and Real Sociedad respectively.

Which other sporting events have been cancelled?

The postponement of sporting events is being left up to the individual sports event organisers.

Friday's horse racing meetings have been cancelled across the UK, as well as day two of England V South Africa's test cricket match at The Oval. In golf, the BMW PGA Championship event was postponed on Thursday evening, with Friday's event also cancelled.

Cycling's Tour of Britain has also been suspended, with the Gallagher Premiership Rugby season openers still under review.

It has been confirmed the Italian F1 Grand Prix will go ahead.

Football teams up and down the country paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, following the news of her sad passing at the age of 96.

At 6.30pm on Thursday 8th September, The Royal Family confirmed the sad news, saying: 'The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

'The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow'.
