Woman in "critical" condition as police car involved in crash in Whitehaven

Two people have been taken to hospital following a serious collision involving a police car in Whitehaven.
Officers were alerted to the incident, which took place on Cleator Moor Road just after 7:50am on Sunday (January 19th).
The crash took place between a police car, being driven by a male police officer in his 20s, and a white Suzuki Celerio, driven by a woman in her 60s.
The force said that the police car that was involved in the collision had been responding to a separate incident when the crash took place.
Emergency services arrived at the area shortly after, with two people being taken to hospital shortly after.
It has since emerged that the woman has sustained serious injuries that have left her in a "critical" condition.
Cleator Moor Road has been closed whilst investigations by forensics teams are carried out. Cumbria Police have said that the road may be shut for some time, and those travelling through the area are being urged to find other routes.
Cumbria Police added that it immediately referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following the incident, while the circumstances behind the crash are being investigated.
