The police watchdog is investigating the death of a man who became ill after being restrained by police officers and security staff outside a London bar.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it was appealing for witnesses after Adam Tidman, 34, died in hospital two weeks after the incident at Belushi's Bar in Southwark, south London, shortly after midnight on January 25.

At the time, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said officers found criminal damage to rooms in a nearby hotel and were alerted to a man causing a disturbance in the area a few minutes later.

The IOPC said Mr Tidman was being held down by the bar's security staff when the police arrived and officers continued to restrain him but he then became unwell.

He was taken to hospital by paramedics but died on February 11.

The IOPC said it was notified of the incident by the Met on January 25 and it has subsequently collected police bodyworn camera and CCTV footage and witness accounts.

Witnesses sought

IOPC director Amanda Rowe, said: "We would like to pass on our thoughts to Mr Tidman's family and all of those affected by this incident.

"It's possible that a number of bystanders may have witnessed him being restrained on Borough High Street or the events that led up to it.

"It's vitally important that we establish the full circumstances leading up to the man's death and therefore we're appealing to anyone who saw what happened to contact our investigators to help us to establish all of the circumstances surrounding his death."

A Met Police spokesperson said: "We are aware of this investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

"It is important for public confidence that the details of this incident which tragically led to the death of Adam Tidman are thoroughly investigated. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends.

"The officers involved are aware of the IOPC's investigation."

Bar praised for quick response

A spokesperson for Belushi's said: "We take the safety and security of our guests, staff, and the wider community very seriously. As such, we are fully co-operating with the police and authorities to assist them in their ongoing investigation.

"While this event did not occur within our venue or involve any of our customers, some of our team members were actively involved in managing the situation ahead of the arrival of emergency services.

"We have been commended by the police and services for our team's quick response and commitment to the wellbeing of the community. We encourage anyone with relevant information to contact the local police department directly."

Witnesses are asked to contact the IOPC at boroughhighstreet@policeconduct.gov.uk or by calling 0300 303 5592.
