After Prime Minister Boris Johnson's announcement about another lockdown across England on Monday night, many people have been left wondering which shops and businesses will remain open, with the new rules excepted to last until mid-February at least.
As we all prepare to help protect both each other and the NHS over the next six weeks, with Boris Johnson admitting the new variant of the virus is between 50 and 70% more transmissible, we've made a handy little guide to which shops and businesses will remain open during England's 2021 national lockdown.
Which shops and businesses will remain open during lockdown in England?
Unlike the first national lockdown in March last year, a number of additional shops and businesses will be allowed to remain open over the next four weeks. See a full list below:

Launderettes and dry cleaners

Which shops and businesses will close during lockdown in England?
- Non-essential retail
- Hospitality venues including pubs, bars, socials clubs, cafes and restaurants.
- Personal care facilities including hairdressers, beauty bars, nail salons, tanning salons, tattoo parlours and spas.
- Gyms, leisure and sports facilities
- Entertainment venues including casinos, cinemas, museums, theatres, bingo halls, soft-play centres, theme parks, zoos and bowling alleys.
- Hotels, hostels, guest houses and campsites. (Except for specific circumstances - work purposes, homeless people or main residence.)
- Community centres and halls
- Schools - except for vulnerable children and the children of keyworkers.
Speaking during a live press conference on Monday 4th January, Boris Johnson told the public, “With most of the country already under extreme measures, it’s clear that we must do more together to control while our vaccines are rolled out. In England, we must go into a national lockdown which is tough enough to contain this variant.
"This means the government is once again instructing you to say at home. You may only leave home for limited reasons permitted in law, such as to shop for essentials, to work if you absolutely cannot work from home, to exercise, to seek medical attention such as getting a Covid test or to escape domestic abuse”
