Armed forces personnel, emergency services staff, prison officers and members of the Royal Household are being issued with a commemorative medal to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

It's made of nickel silver, with an image of Her Majesty and an inscription in Latin.

That reads 'Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina Fid Def' which translates as 'Elizabeth II, By the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith'.

The medals are starting to be given out - to be worn from June 2022

They're starting to be handed out now, ahead of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.

The medals are being issued to specific groups of people:

  • Serving members of the Armed Forces that have completed five full calendar years of service on 6th February 2022
  • Frontline emergency services personnel in paid service, retained or voluntary capacities, that have completed five full calendar years of service on 6th February 2022
  • Prison services personnel who are publicly employed that have completed five full calendar years of service on 6th February 2022
  • Members of the Royal Household with one year of qualifying service
  • Living individual recipients of the George Cross
  • Living individual recipients of the Victoria Cross

In a letter to Wiltshire Police officers receiving their medal, Superintendent Conway Duncan said the medal is important recognition for those serving:

"The awarding of any medal is an honour, and the Platinum Jubilee Medal is no different. This medal recognises the exceptional nature of your role and is a mark of your dedication.

"I would ask you to take this time to reflect on your career; you should be proud of your achievements and your service to your country."
