Police have been working to shut down an 'illegal gathering' in Cornwall, described on social media as a rave.

Officers were called to Davidstow Moor near Camelford at around 10pm on Friday night, amid claims of loud music.

They later described the area as gridlocked with limited access for emergency vehicles - and said roads would be closed until further notice.

Local residents have taken to social media to say the music was so loud, it could be heard from as far away as 10 miles and had kept them up all night.

One post at around 4am said: "Still rave at Davidstow Moor. The music has been going on for over 6 hours. I am told the police are trying to shut it down roads blocked and limited access for the emergency services".

Devon & Cornwall Police gave an update in the early hours of Saturday morning (June 4th), to say: "Our concerns are both for the people in attendance and the impact on the local community.

"We are currently at the scene working with members of the public to bring about closing the event down.

"Local roads are currently gridlocked and there is limited access for emergency vehicles to attend should they be needed.

"In the interest of public safety, we are asking anyone thinking about attending the event not to do so. Especially as this is intended to be closed down shortly.

"We have also closed local roads in the area until further notice".

Thousands of people are said to have travelled to the so-called rave which police say is still ongoing.

Posting on Facebook, Helen, who lives in the area, said: "No sleep for us thanks to an illegal rave up on Davidstow airfield. Music banging like it's in the garden. And God help the poor animals up there, they must be terrified. Farmers live stock under threat, let alone their land".

She continued "God knows what will be left up there", before adding "all those living closer, please stay safe".

Dozens of people have replied to the post, to say they could hear the noise from around the area, including Delabole.

Helen responded: "They've been there all night, but thousands of people. All they could do is block the roads to try and stop more getting there. It's getting louder and driving us crazy. They can even hear it 10 miles away".

Devon & Cornwall Police have sealed off the site and blocked all entrances to the area.

Their latest update states: "Officers remain at Davidstow Moor this morning responding to this incident, which is still ongoing.

"We are continuing to ask the public to adhere to safety messaging and not to attend the event".
