As of 9:48am on Wednesday 16th December, 137,897 in the UK had received the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19.

This includes 108,000 people in England, 18,000 in Scotland, 4,000 in Northern Ireland and just under 8,000 in Wales.

Vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi said it had been “a really good start to the vaccination programme.”

The figures come as doctors and health experts across the UK urge people who are called up to get the jab.

Campaigns by Public Health England and The Department of Health and Social Care highlight the importance of vaccinations in protecting our society.

Health secretary Matt Hancock confirmed the figures, tweeting: “Thanks to the hard work of the NHS across the UK over 137,000 people have already received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

“This is just the start and we will steadily expand our vaccination programme – ultimately helping everyone get back to normal life.”
