Following Government discussions around compulsory face coverings in shops and supermarkets, it has now been announced that from the 24th July face coverings will become mandatory in England. It is hoped that putting these measures in place will prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Face coverings became compulsory in Scotland last week with over 100 countries requiring coverings to be worn in public places.

A Number 10 spokesperson confirmed the news in a statement that said; 'There is growing evidence that wearing a face covering in an enclosed space helps protect individuals and those around them from coronavirus.

'The Prime Minister has been clear that people should be wearing face coverings in shops and we will make this mandatory from July 24.'

Anyone who fails to follow the new rules could face a potential fine of up to £100.

Face coverings have been mandatory on public transport since the 15th June, but up until now, people have only been advised to wear face masks or face coverings in shops and supermarkets in England.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock is due to outline the guidance in a briefing on Tuesday 14th July.
