People doing their Christmas shopping are now being advised to take a lateral flow test to prevent the spread of coronavirus this winter.

New updated government advice has recommended that those hitting the high street to do the antigen test, to ensure safety "in crowded and enclosed spaces".

While there is no direct reference to Christmas in the new guidance, the change in advice comes at a time when thousands of people are likely to be in retail shops and shopping centres.

Previously, the government had recommended that people take two lateral flow tests a week, with a particular focus on families with children going to school.

Members of the public are being urged to take a lateral flow test before entering areas like shopping centres.

The shift in advice comes as infection rates across the UK and Europe are on the rise.

Countries such as Austria and the Netherlands have imposed new restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19 and bring on a fourth wave of infection.

However, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that new limits on gatherings - termed 'Plan B' by the government - would be unlikely to be implemented for the winter.

'Plan B' would also include the reintroduction of mandatory face masks, as well as the instruction to work from home.

Lateral flow tests to follow the new government guidance are available for free at local pharmacies across the UK.
