Idris Elba returns to music with single 'Knives Down' to launch new campaign
Idris has launched Don’t Stop Your Future
Luther actor Idris Elba isn't just a talented actor, he's a talented rapper and DJ. Idris has also recently launched a campaign called Don't Stop Your Future, demanding the UK Government takes immediate action to prevent serious youth violence regarding knife crime.
Idris joined Jordan and Perri on KISS Breakfast to talk about his new single 'Knives Down', and the campaign, which officially launched on 8th January.
Speaking to the boys about it, he explained: "I launched Don't Stop Your Future campaign, which is an organisation I've had for a three, four years now, but every New Year's Eve we have another fatal murdering with knife crime, and I think that the country, as a society, we're fed up with it."
He went on to say: "Yesterday (8th January) was a sort of big launch, we went to Parliament, we had the clothes of actual victims laid out in nice neat rows outside of Parliament, just to really poke some real focus on this topic.
"You know, what with the New Year and everyone has new intentions in the New Year and new energy we wanted to hit him really hard."
Idris then went on to reveal that as a father himself, it really hits home to hear from parents who have lost their children to knife crime.
"You're there when your child is born, you see it as a joyous day. You're not often there when they pass, and to hear the details of how your child was taken, and you hear the horrible graphic details of what happened to them, it's heartbreaking," he explained.
Idris is now calling for the Government to finally take this issue seriously by immediately banning zombie knives and machetes, as well as funding youth services.
In addition to launching the campaign, Idris has also released his song 'Knives Down', which he said is not there to be a ‘pop song’ but aims to deliver a much needed message.
