Gerard Butler reveals he auditioned for an iconic Harry Potter character 😲
He was chatting to Jordan and Perri
Last updated 9th Jun 2025
Hollywood actor Gerard Butler joined Jordan and Perri on KISS Breakfast to talk about his upcoming film How to Train Your Dragon, and just happened to let slip that he auditioned for an iconic Harry Potter character.
The actor, who is known for his roles in Olympus Has Fallen, Greenland and Plane, plays the role of Stoick the Vast in the live action re-make of How To Train Your Dragon, along with Nick Frost, who has been announced to play Hagrid in the new Harry Potter TV series.
When Perri asked Gerard if he would like to play a character in the Harry Potter universe, alongside Nick Frost, he admitted that he hasn't seen it enough! However, he exclusively told KISS that he DID audition for a role in the films some time ago.
Explaining what happened he said: "I auditioned for the role that Gary Oldman ended up playing (Sirius Black), so I know that name because that's a role... I think I'd have done a good job, but hey."
Gary Oldman went on to play Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, reprising his role in the sequels, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, with a cameo in Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Although we're eagerly-awaiting the release of the live action version of How To Train Your Dragon, 15 years ago, Gerard voice-acted the same role in the animated films, and he spoke about what it was like, bringing the character to life in the live action version.
He told Jordan and Perri: "I always wanted the chance to move my body, you know try and be that size and step into that world, and unfortunately, I hadn't really realised if you do want to be that size, you've got to get very big! They've got to give you a huge costume!"
Gerard went on to reveal he was given a costume that weighed 92lbs, a massive 41kg, or 6.5 stone!

When asked if he took anything home from the film, the actor went on to share that the production team had a special Stoick sword and hilt made for him to keep, which he now has on his wall.
"I used to have my 300 sword and shield," he told the team: "But that burned in the fire in Malibu (in 2019)."
When is How To Train Your Dragon released?
It will be released on Friday 13th June in cinemas, it is also available in IMAX cinemas.
