Netflix reveal how they are going to stop users sharing passwords
They will be cracking down on password sharing
After Netflix announced last year that subscribers might need to start paying if they want to share their password outside of their household, they have now revealed details on how they will go about enforcing this.
Now, as the FAQs page has been updated on Netflix's website, it has become clear how subscribers will be asked to verify their account if they use it outside of their usual setting.
Who can you share your Netflix account with?
As before, users will be able to share their account with others who live in the same house, for example if parents have children who live at home, they can all have their own profiles. However, families with older children, who might have moved away to university, will now need to have their own account.
How will Netflix verify your device?
If someone signs in from a device that isn't part of your household then you will be asked to verify your device. A code will be emailed or texted to the phone number on your account, and you will have 15 minutes to enter it into the device you are verifying.
How will Netflix identify a household device?
According to Netflix's website: 'We use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity from devices signed into the Netflix account.'
Will Netflix charge you if you share your password?
Netflix state in their FAQs: 'Netflix will not automatically charge you if you share your account with someone who doesn’t live with you.'
You can read more on Netflix's FAQs.
How much does a Netflix subscription cost?
Last year, Netflix announced they would be increasing their membership prices, the new basic membership (with adverts) is £4.99pm, while the standard membership for Netflix is now £10.99pm going up to £15.99pm for the premium package which allows you to stream on four devices at the same time and gives 4k + HDR resolution.
What have Netflix said about sharing passwords?
In March 2022, in an official blog, Chengyi Long, Director of Product Innovation for the streaming giant, said they will start charging for sharing passwords outside of your household, in three countries.
Writing on the website: 'We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans.
'While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households - impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.'
