Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ goes double platinum in the UK
The album has now sold over 600,000 copies
Taylor Swift’s latest album ‘1989’ has officially gone double platinum in the UK.
The pop star’s fifth studio album has now been purchased over 600,000 times in the country since it was originally released in October 2014.
The LP gained double platinum status within the first three weeks of its US release, with album sales currently standing at over 4.6 million in the states.
Taylor sparked controversy at the time when she removed her whole back catalogue from Spotify, including ‘1989’, days after its release.
She claimed that bosses of the popular streaming site were not compensating artists and songwriters properly.
Swift has since allowed some of her music to be placed on Jay Z’s subscription-based streaming service Tidal and has reportedly opened talks with Apple’s Beats Music service over an exclusive deal.
Meanwhile, Taylor was recently presented with the ‘Milestone Award for Youngest ACM Entertainer of the year’ by the Academy of Country Music in the US.
She was handed the award by her cancer-stricken mother Andrea Swift, who delivered a moving speech honouring her daughter’s achievements.
