Little Simz accepts Mercury Prize for her fourth album with an emotional speech
She said all nominees were incredible
Mega congratulations are in order for Little Simz! The British rapper has just picked up the Mercury Prize for British album of the year, for her 2021 album 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert'. 👏
Little Simz, who already has a number of awards under her belt, including a BRIT Award for Best New Act, couldn't believe it when her name was read out, beating other nominees, Fergus McCreadie, Gwenno, Harry Styles, Jessie Buckley & Bernard Butler, Joy Crookes, Kojey Radical, Nova Twins, Sam Fender, Self Esteem, Wet Leg, and Yard Act.
After a huge round of applause, Little Simz made her way to the stage to accept the gong, telling the audience she was very "overwhelmed and grateful" to receive the award. She went on to say: "To my family over here, my loved ones right here. I want to say a huge thank you to the Mercury for this incredible prize.
"I want to say thank you to my brother and close collaborator Inflo… he’s known me since I was so young, he’s stuck by me, we created this album together.
"There was times in the studio when I didn’t know if I was going to finish this record, I was feeling all the emotions and really going through it. He stuck by me and pushed me to deliver this album for you guys."
The 'Introvert' singer went on to thank her fans, and Mercury Prize presenters Jamz Supernova and Lauren Laverne, ending by saying it was an award for all of the nominees.
"And last but never ever least, I want to big up all the other nominees tonight, all the other albums, enjoy... to Kojey, Self Esteem, Wet Leg all of you guys are incredible, we all made incredible albums, we all changed people's lives with our music, and that's the most important thing. So this is for us really, know what I'm saying? Thank you so much!"
'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert' is the artist's fourth album and was released in September 2021, reaching Number 4 in the UK. All 19 tracks on the album were co-written by Little Simz and it included her Number 11 hit 'Introvert'.
