Author: Jodie FernandesPublished 27th Jul 2021

Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall takes you through those Old Skool girl-power Anthems that influenced her career. It's Pop divas and RnB queens galore! 👑

Little Mix - 'Salute' (2013) 🙌

Giving us all those military vibes with a strong focus on female empowerment. Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock said, "We all wanted to write a song - a real proper, empowering girl-power song for such a long time, and for this album we got it".

Sweet Female Attitude - 'Flowers' (2000) 💐

A KISSTORY classic, "Flowers" is the debut single from Manchester garage duo Sweet Female Attitude. A song you will forever share with your girlfriends in the middle of a festival in the pouring rain!

🔊 Love your UK Garage then check out SHOSH's show on KISS Nights Monday's from 11pm!

TLC - 'Waterfalls' (1995) 🌊

Obviously, they are one of the most iconic girl groups of all time. Me and the girls are very heavily influenced by them serving vocals, choreo, and look after look in every music video!

"Waterfalls" is based on the idea that people chase intangible dreams without thinking about the consequences. The song was an international hit, charting #1 in multiple countries.

Mary Mary - 'Shackles' (Praise You) (2000) 🔗

This song in particular shows off some of the best ad libs we've ever heard on an R&B girl group track.

"Shackles (Praise You)" is based on the concept that God’s love sets you free and ultimately raised the profile of the duo in the gospel music industry.

Mis-Teeq - 'One Night Stand' (2001) ☝️

Mis-Teeq was a British girl group, consisting of three members, Su-Elise Nash and Sabrina Washington, and Alesha Dixon commonly known for her high-profile appearances as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Talent. But before all that, Alesha was the sassiest MC you were ever likely to meet.

Eternal - 'I Wanna Be The Only One' (1997) 💘

I just feel like the minute this chorus comes in, you can't help smile when you hear it. It just gets you going. It reminds me of Summer!

"I Wanna Be The Only One" topped the UK Singles charts in 1997, and was the British R&B girl group Eternal's biggest hit.

En Vogue - 'Don’t Let Go' (1996) 🤝

This is a very special song to myself and the girls because it was one of the songs that we performed on the X-Factor 10 years ago.

It really was a sort of turning point for us in our career. In the beginning, I feel like this was the song that got people, pricking their ears up and voting for us and realising that we could be the next big girl band!

All-female R&B group En Vogue originally recorded this song for the soundtrack of the crime movie 'Set It Off.'

Destiny’s Child - 'Girl' (2005) 💁‍♀️

I feel like Destiny's child, or like the embodiment of Girl Power. A proper a good friendship song.

“Girl” was written by Beyoncé Knowles and Michelle Williams as a plea to their fellow bandmate Kelly Rowland to leave her abusive relationship. Rowland said, “The girls wrote it for me. Destiny's Child is deeper than what people see on the surface. Those are my homies for life! Those girls, we stuck with each other - period”.

Sugarbabes - 'Overload' (2000) 👯‍♀️

When this song came out, I remember just being fascinated. It was so cool and different to what other girl bands were doing at that moment.

“Overload" is based around a teenage crush and finding the situation difficult to cope with. A song from the original Sugababes, which consisted of Keisha Buchanan, Siobhán Donaghy, and Mutya Buena.

Booty Luv - 'Some Kinda Rush' (2007) 🍑 💜

It's a proper feel good. It reminds me of being out in the clubs when I was younger, having a good time with all my mates!

Electronic vocal duo - Booty Luv was formed from two members originally part of Hip Hop and R&B group Big Brovaz known for there hits, 'Nu Flow', 'Favourite Things' and 'Baby Boy'

Fifth Harmony - 'Work From Home' (2016) 👷‍♀️

We love a bit of sisterhood and women being successful together and 'Work From Home is yeah, an absolute tune!

Originally titled "Work" Fifth Harmony had to re-title the song to "Work from Home" to avoid confusion with Rihanna's song of the same name. FACT: 'Work From Home' was co-written by KISSTORY artist Daniel Beddingfield, know for his 2001 hit 'Gotta Get Thru This'. 🎥 WATCH Ed Sheeran sing it in this 00's mash-up here
