Ice Cube, O’Shea Jackson Jr and Jason Mitchell chat to Shortee Blitz about Straight Outta Compton and working with Dr Dre.
Shortee Blitz caught up with Ice Cube and Straight Outta Compton cast members O’Shea Jackson Jr., who plays Ice Cube, and Jason Mitchell, who plays Eazy-E, to talk about the film, whether things have changed much since NWA were formed and working with Dr Dre.
Dismissing any questions of nepotism, O’Shea Jr said he was more than ready to play his father.
“I auditioned for two years,” he explained.
“By the time of the first ‘action’, there’s no way no-one can tell me I’m not the man for the job”
His performance definitely had an impact on ‘Pops’ Ice Cube.
“As a father I’m the most proud, as a producer I’m very proud and as an artist I’m humbled and honoured that Universal saw it fit to spend this much money to tell my story”.
Jason Mitchell, who stars as Eazy-E said a lot of preparation went into playing their NWA counterparts.
“We had a complete transformation process where we had to do different diets. We had to do weight training…it was just a lot to adapt to”.
During the interview, Ice Cube and O’Shea Jackson Jr. also both discussed working with Dr Dre on the film.
“He’s super super hands on, perfectionist type dude” explained Oshea Jr, “He wanted to make sure this film was right ‘cos it’s their life…He was there even days where Corey Hawkins, who plays him, wasn’t there”
“It’s like being in with a master” said Ice Cube, but explained “when it comes to this movie thing, I take the lead. When it comes to that music thing, you gotta let Dre take the lead.”
Straight Outta Compton hits UK cinemas on Friday 28th August.
