Selena Gomez has made her first public appearance since checking herself into rehab earlier in the year. The singer announced her break from the spotlight in August opening up to fans about her battle with anxiety and depression following the diagnosis that she suffered from lupus.

But Selena was back at last night’s American Music Awards accepting the award for Favourite Pop/ Rock Female Artist. Selena addressed her tough year during her acceptance speech, saying : “I think it's safe to say that a lot of you know a lot of my life whether I liked it or not and I had to stop. Because I had everything, and I was absolutely broken. And I kept it together and I swore I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down." Gomez continued, " I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram, I want to see what’s in here. (gesturing to her heart) I'm not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore…. If you are broken you do not have to stay broken.”
