A woman who was assaulted as she intervened to stop an attack in Wigan has been blinded in one eye. Just before midnight on Saturday 9 April 2016, a couple (a 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman) left the Goose Green Club, Little Lane and witnessed a man was being assaulted by two others. The 25-year-old man shouted at the attackers to stop but the attackers started punching him as he tried to protect himself. The woman then started shouting at the attackers; one of them punched her in the face, hitting her hard enough that she fell to the floor. The two men then took off in the direction of the club. The other male victim who was initially being assaulted also took off. The woman’s eye had closed and immediately began to swell. Her partner suffered bruises and a cut to his right hand. The couple later attended hospital where the woman underwent surgery on her left eye. As a result of this assault she has now permanently lost sight in her left eye. The first attacker is described as a 20/30-year-old man with a peculiar haircut, side shaved and middle left long. He was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. The second attacker is described as a 20/30-year-old man. Detective Constable Brian Johnston from GMP’s Wigan division said: “This couple are completely innocent and it is heart-breaking that as a result of them simply trying to help someone else in distress, this woman has now been left with life changing injuries and is blind in one eye. “If you were the man being assaulted by these two men, then please get in touch with the police, as you may be able to help us identify these two offenders so we can take these men off our streets.” Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 7182 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
