Lord Mayor to lead World Aids Day vigil

Manchester is joining cities across the globe to mark World Aids Day as people are urged to get themselves tested.

A series of events across Manchester will show unity for all those living with HIV, and remember those who have lost their lives to the virus.

In the Gay Village a procession led by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Carl Austin-Behan will begin at Sackville Gardens by the national AIDS memorial before arriving back at Sackville Gardens for a candle lit vigil.

Councillor Peter Cookson, Manchester City Council’s lead member for gay men’s issues will address the crowds. There will also be a live musical performance from Glee musician and activist Claire Mooney, and drag star Divina De Campo. The vigil will also feature people speaking about their own experiences.

Councillor Peter Cookson said: “It’s important that we remember and celebrate those we have lost to the virus, and encourage people to find out their HIV status. Treatment has improved so much in recent years that if you’re diagnosed early you can expect to live just as long as someone who is HIV negative. But the key thing is to find out your status, and getting tested has never been easier.”

Lord Mayor Of Manchester, Councillor Carl Austin-Behan said: “The events and activities taking place across the city not only commemorate those who have lost their lives to the virus, but help towards the eradication of the stigma and discrimination all too often faced by all those living with HIV.”

There will also be other events across Manchester. On Saturday 3rd December there will be music, food, and dance at St Thomas Centre in Ardwick. Also Manchester Piccadilly Train Station will host the world AIDS Day stall from 10am – 4pm today, where visitors will be encouraged to post photos and messages across social media to show their support.
