The Big Salford Clean Up Continues

Published 28th Dec 2015

The clean-up operation across Greater Manchester has continued after the River Irwell burst its banks on Boxing day.

Hundreds of people in Salford had to be evacuated after heavy downpours devastated the area.

In Lower Broughton, the water reached up to waist high, and since then Salix Homes bosses have working to support tenants in their homes.

Sue Sutton is managing the clear-up effort there, she spoke to Key 103:

“What we’ve done since Boxing Day is first of all assess the situation, make sure people are safe and move them out where necessary, particularly the elderly and vulnerable.”

“Over the next couple of days we’ll work through the homes, any repairs over the last few days have been dealt with. Once the properties start drying out we’re hoping to get everything back to normal in the next couple of weeks.”

“People are very upset, but at the same time the community have pulled together, volunteers have come from far and wide. There’s great community spirit, but equally people are very upset.”
