Man charged over Sunderland crash which left motorcyclist critically ill

A man has been charged over a crash in Sunderland - which left a motorcyclist in a critical condition.
A motorbike and a car collided on the A183 Coast Road in the Whitburn area on Thursday night (17th April 2025).
The motorcycle rider – a man in his 20s - suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he's continuing to receive treatment.
The road was closed overnight following the incident and reopened yesterday (Friday 18th April 2025.
Detectives initially arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder.
They've since confirmed Robert Cottam, who's 33 and from Rupert Street in Whitburn, has been charged with dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm.
He is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court today (Saturday 19th April 2025).
