The Chairman of Kendal Rugby Club's released a statement after two children were hit by a car on a sports pitch.

One child has died and another has been injured following a collision at the club on Shap Road at around 5pm on Wednesday (6 March).

Cumbria Police say a man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

It is being treated as an isolated incident and there is no suggestion it is terror-related.

In a statement, Dr Stephen Green, Chairman of Kendal Rugby Club, said:

"We are deeply saddened to confirm that an incident occurred today (6 March) at Kendal Rugby Club, resulting in a tragic loss of a child's life.

"Our thoughts are with their family and friends and we kindly ask for privacy for all involved at this difficult time.

"We are cooperating fully with the authorities as they conduct their investigation - the Club and all facilities are temporarily closed while this is carried out."

Cumbria Police have said specialist investigators remain at the scene and the area has been cordoned off as initial investigation enquiries take place.

Posting on X, Tim Farron, MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, said it was "devastating, utterly heartbreaking news".

"I'm praying for the children and for their families and friends," he said.

"Our community in Kendal is stunned and in mourning."
