Tributes pour in for boxing legend George Foreman who's died aged 76
His family say they've been left broken-hearted by the loss
Former two-time world heavyweight champion George Foreman has died at the age of 76, his family announced.
A post on the American’s Instagram account said he died peacefully on Friday surrounded by family.
“Our hearts are broken,” the post said.
“With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones.
“A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.
“A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two-time heavyweight champion of the world, he was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name — for his family.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honour the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own.”
Foreman had a glittering boxing career
Foreman was an Olympic gold medallist in 1968 before claiming his first heavyweight title with a stoppage win over Joe Frazier in 1973.
He lost the belt a year later to Muhammad Ali in the ‘Rumble In the Jungle’ bout held in the African nation then known as Zaire.
His second championship came more than two decades later at the age of 45, with a stunning knockout win over Michael Moorer in 1994 making him the oldest heavyweight champion ever.
He retired from the sport in 1997 with a record of 76 wins – 68 by knockout – and just five losses.
From boxer to businessman
Foreman found tremendous success in the business world after his retirement, with his popular George Foreman Grill selling in the millions.
He was married five times and is survived by 12 children.
Tributes began to pour in following the news, with former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson saying Foreman’s “contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten”.
Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum said: “George was a great friend to not only myself but my entire family. We’ve lost a family member and are absolutely devastated.”
Ex-NBA player Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who won five titles with Los Angeles Lakers, said it was a “pleasure getting to know (Foreman) not only as a boxer but as a man”.
He wrote on X: “I was really sad to hear the news that one of my boxing heroes, George Foreman, passing away.
“I attended so many of George’s championship fights over his career. He was a knockout artist in the ring, and it was a pleasure getting to know him not only as a boxer but as a man.
“After leaving the ring, he turned into an amazing businessman — I even bought one of the first George Foreman grills! (Johnson’s wife) Cookie and I will be praying for his family during this time.”
Actor John Cusack said: “Beyond a living legend in the ring – just a wonderful spirit – an incredibly kind generous man — in person. I always remember every encounter with great gratitude — it was an honour to know him.”
Charles Barkley, Hall of Fame NBA player, said the loss “just hurts”.
“I got to know Mr Foreman a little bit, seeing him at all the boxing matches and I always picked his brain about trying to be an entrepreneur when your career is over,” he said.
“It hurts a lot because he was obviously one of the greatest boxers ever, but just a gentle man, was a pastor. This just hurts.”

Thomas the Tank Engine creator Britt Allcroft sadly passed away at the age of 81 in January. Her death was announced by filmmaker Brannon Carty, who released at emotional statement from her beloved family.
The Vivienne
Drag Queen The Vivienne, real name James Lee Williams, sadly died at the age of 32 in January, leaving the entertainment world in shock. Publicist Simon Jones shared the sad news in a statement on social media, writing: 'It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend. James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted, and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother, and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career. We will not be releasing any further details. We please ask that James's family are given the time and privacy they now need to process and grieve.'
Tony Slattery
Comedian and actor Tony Slattery sadly died at the age of 65 in January, following a heart attack. A statement on behalf of his partner Mark Michael Hutchinson said: "It is with great sadness we must announce actor and comedian Tony Slattery, aged 65, has passed away today, Tuesday morning, following a heart attack on Sunday evening."
Linda Nolan
Linda Nolan, best known as one of The Nolans, sadly died aged 65 in January. The singer, who performed with sisters Anne, Denise, Maureen, Bernie and Coleen, was diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago and lost her battle in early 2025.
Diane Langton
English actress Diane Langton, who played the iconic role of Nana McQueen in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, sadly died at the age of 77 in January. Her agent confirmed the sad news, writing: 'I am sad to say that Diane Langton passed away this morning.'

Actor Paul Danan, best known for his role in Hollyoaks and his appearances on Celebrity Love Island and Celebrity Big Brother, sadly passed away at the age of 46 in January. Her hits included 'Tears Go By', which was written by The Rolling Stones' Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Roberta was known for hits including 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' and 'Killing Me Softly With His Song'. Michelle Trachtenberg - famed for her roles as Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl, and Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as Harriet the Spy - sadly died in February 2025. It was reported that Michelle was found in her New York apartment, by her mother, on 26th, with publications reporting that it was believed she died of natural causes.
Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy
Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead alongside their dog at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on 26th February 2025. A statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff in New Mexico said: "We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence on Sunset Trail. This is an active investigation - however, at this time we do not believe that foul play was a factor."

Simon's agent Kim Barry said in a statement: "Today I lost not only a client in Simon Fisher-Becker, but a close personal friend of 15 years standing. I shall never forget the phone call I made to him when he was offered the part of Dorium Moldovar in BBC's Dr Who. Simon was also a writer, a raconteur and a great public speaker. He helped me out enormously and was kind, gracious and interested in everyone. My condolences go to his husband Tony, his brother, nieces and nephews and his legion of fans."

Former Formula One team owner Eddie Jordan sadly died at the age of 76 in March, after suffering with bladder and prostate cancer which had spread to his spine and pelvis.
A statement from his family read: 'It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE, the ex-Formula 1 team owner, TV pundit and entrepreneur. He passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town in the early hours of 20th March 2025 at the age of 76, after battling with an aggressive form of prostate cancer for the past 12 months. EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy and Irish charm everywhere he went. We all have a huge hole missing without his presence. He will be missed by so many people, but he leaves us with tonnes of great memories to keep us smiling through our sorrow."
