In this exclusive interview with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), You Me At Six's Josh Franceschi explains his reaction to the film Blackfish.

Franceschi talks of how friends and fans told him that the hit documentary was a "must-see" – and says that after he watched the film, which exposes how SeaWorld separates baby orcas from their mothers and sentences them to a life of constant deprivation in concrete tanks, "There wasn't really much of a choice as to what side of the fence I was on."

"My initial reaction to the film was actually just a sense of sadness that people weren't being given the correct information," he says. "I think that we live in a society now where people should be told the truth … and not led to believe something that just isn't true and isn't right."

You can watch the video interview below:

Although SeaWorld has attempted to combat the backlash it has faced since Blackfish's release, attendance at the park has continued to plummet as more people learn how the constant stress and deprivation of captivity leads the orcas at SeaWorld to lash out in frustration at each other and trainers – resulting in injuries and even death. At least 37 orcas and dozens of dolphins have died at SeaWorld parks and affiliated facilities. "I think the fact that this movie's getting so much widespread support across all sorts of publications and outlets is really sort of showing how many people feel passionate about this," concludes Franceschi, "and I hope people will look back at this sort of thing and think, 'Why and how did we allow it to go on for this long'?" Franceschi joins Morrissey and a long list of other musicians, artists, and other celebrities who have teamed up with PETA to promote animal protection.
