WATCH: Metallica sing Rihanna song on new series of Carpool Karaoke
Their foray into the world of pop continues
Fresh from performing with Lady Gaga at the Grammy Awards last Sunday night, footage has emerged of Metallica singing a track by Rihanna.
The metal giants appear on an upcoming episode of Apple Music’s weekly show Carpool Karaoke: The Series - a spin-off from the James Corden Late Late Show sketch - alongside US comedian Billy Eichner.
A newly premiered teaser trailer shows Lars, Kirk, James and Robert gleefully belting out Rihanna’s 2012 song ‘Diamonds’ alongside Eichner.
Later on, we see Metallica invade a supermarket when they sing ‘Enter Sandman’ alongside families doing their weekly shop. You can see footage of Metallica on Carpool Karaoke here:
In other Metallica news, Lars Ulrich has revealed that James Hetfield was the angriest he’d seen him in two decades following the Grammy Awards performance.
Due a technical issue, since blamed on a stage hand, James’ microphone was silent for the opening two minutes of their rendition of ‘Moth Into Flame’ with Lady Gaga. He kicked his microphone stand over and threw his guitar away in disgust at the end.
Lars told James Corden: “We get off stage, we get back there, and I haven't seen (James) like that in twenty years. I mean, he was livid. He's aged really well and he's a pretty chill guy, but the first five or ten minutes in that dressing room was not a lot of fun.
“But, like they say, the show must go on, and we fought through it. And with the fire and Gaga in my lap for about a minute at one point, it was just, 'Keep going, keep going, keep going.' So we fought through it, and a lot of people said that at least it made for great television, which is really the point of doing the Grammys to begin with."
Lars has also told Rolling Stone that he hopes Metallica and Lady Gaga will join forces once again soon and they’re “just getting started.”
He said: “We already started fast-forwarding to the next chapter when we can do more of (performing with Lady Gaga). It's not one of those '20 lawyers, strategists and managers trying to force two people from two different worlds to figure out how to spend four minutes together on a national telecast.'
“Of any of these undertakings, this is about as organic and authentic as there's ever been one. We're just getting started."
Describing Gaga as "quintessential perfect fifth member of this band," Lars added: "Her voice, her attitude, her outlook on everything is so awesome.
“It was so effortless and organic and she just has the spirit of hard rock and metal flowing through her veins. It comes really easy for her. There's nothing contrived; she just has this super-warm, easy energy."
