Green Day have given their 1997 anthem ‘Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)’ a unique makeover.

On US chat show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night (3rd April), the host introduced a brand new feature called ‘Lyrics We Can Afford to Songs We Love.’

Colbert explained: “I'm a huge Green Day fan, or as we call ourselves, Green Beans. While they were here, I asked if I could sing my favourite Green Day song ‘Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)’.

“They said ‘absolutely, if you pay for it.’ And I said ‘no way’. Which brings us to the first instalment of our exciting new segment…”

The show then cut to Green Day’s dressing room where Billie Joe strummed an acoustic guitar with Late Show band leader Jon Baptiste joining him on a melodica.

With Billie Joe and Colbert trading lead vocals, and Tré and Mike providing backing harmonies, the quintet switched the ‘Good Riddance’ lyrics for the words to 1850 song ‘Camptown Races’ by Stephen Foster.

Due to it being 167 years old, the song is freely available in public domain so there are no performance royalties tied to performing the track.
