They also slam the "horrendous" election

Green Day switched the lyrics during their performance of ‘American Idiot’ at the MTV Europe Music Awards last night to slam Donald Trump.

Billie Joe, Mike and Tré attended the heavily pop music dominated ceremony at the Ahoy Rotterdam arena in Holland to pick up their Global Icon Award and perform ‘American Idiot’ and ‘Bang Bang’.

During their typically rip-roaring rendition of ‘American Idiot’, outspoken Trump critic Billie Joe Armstrong changed the words “The subliminal mind f*** America” to “The subliminal mind Trump America” to have a pop at his arch nemesis.

When the three stepped up on stage to accept the biggest award of the night, Global Icon, Billie Joe also hit out at the “horrendous” US election.

“I’ve got to say one thing, it’s really nice to be in Europe right now,” Billie Joe told the crowd. “It’s especially nice to be in Holland - we’ve been coming here for many years, since we were gosh, just a little bit older than you guys.

“But most of all it’s nice to be out of America, just for a second because of this horrendous election that’s going on right now, Our entire country is about to have one big collective heart attack”.

Green Day were also nominated for Best Live Act and Best Rock Act but lost out to Twenty One Pilots and Coldplay(!!!!!!!) respectively.

The trio play three completely sold out UK shows in February before returning to headline British Summer Time Hyde Park on Saturday 1st July.
