Red Hot Chili Peppers have been unveiled as the first blockbuster headliners of Read & Leeds Festivals 2016.

In a festival exclusive, the Californian rock heroes – who release their 11th studio album very soon - will bring their inimitable sounds to the Main Stage nine years after their last triumph at the dual hosted festival.

Reading & Leeds main man Melvin Benn enthused: “I’m thrilled to be able to announce Red Hot Chili Peppers as the first headliner for Reading & Leeds 2016, as a festival exclusive.

“Their incredible live show will be an unforgettable headline performance at the UK's biggest music festival. We’ve still got some really exciting names to announce and I can’t wait to reveal the rest of the line up. It’s going to be our best year yet.”

Also confirmed for the Bank Holiday Weekend music extravaganza are the mighty Twenty One Pilots, Japanese rave-metallers Crossfaith, visceral live performers Slaves plus indie-rock favourites The 1975 and Courteeners.

Completing the first wave of announcements are Hinds, Rat Boy, Boy Better Know and DJ EZ.
