Three years after they performed with Chinese pianist Lang Lang at the Grammy Awards, Metallica have lined up another big name collaborator for this week’s ceremony.
The metal legends will duet with pop singer Lady Gaga at The Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday (12th February) exactly one week on from the singer’s Super Bowl half time performance.
News of the Metallica/Lady Gaga collaboration emerged via a Grammys TV commercial, which you can see right here:
It’s currently unclear what track or tracks Metallica and Gaga will be joining forces on.
A statement from The Grammy Awards reads: "The Recording Academy and CBS Television Network are happy to confirm that Lady Gaga will be performing with previously announced Metallica at the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards. In true GRAMMY Moment fashion, this pairing is sure to make for another unforgettable performance during Music’s Biggest Night."
Metallica singer James Hetfield was forced to pull out of the band’s second show in Copenhagen, Denmark on Sunday due to an unspecified throat issue, however, Metallica’s shows in Lars Ulrich’s homeland will go ahead tonight and on Thursday.
Before finding fame, Lady Gaga fronted a Led Zeppelin covers band and cites Iron Maiden with changing her life.
Explaining why she would rather be the new Maiden than Madonna she told the CR Fashion Book in 2015: “They’re one of the greatest rock bands in history, in my opinion.
“Some people really don’t know the importance of metal and the scope of it. Those guys were filling stadiums, and they still are. And it’s because of the culture of the music, the poetry that’s so powerful, that whenever the fans come together, they unite in the essence of what Iron Maiden is all about. I always used to say to people, when they would say, ‘Oh, she’s the next Madonna.’ No, I’m the next Iron Maiden.”
In the wake of her Super Bowl performance in Houston, Texas on Sunday, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian tweeted: “Goddamn @ladygaga, you killed it. Let's make a metal record.”
