Proof that metalheads are among the finest people on the planet, Metallica fans donated nine tons of food for starving children and pets at the band’s Colombia gig last week.

James, Lars, Robert and Kirk joined forces with two charities - Fundación Challenger which provides food to impoverished kids and Corazones Peluditos which works to feed and find abandon pets a home – and asked fans to bring non-perishable food items to their show at the Los Andes Stadium in Bogata on Tuesday 1st November.

Backed by the band and promoters Move Concerts, the drive exceeded all expectations with around 25,000 fans donating over nine tons of food items before the show.

As AXS reports, Fundación Challenger are distributing their share of the donations to the impoverished Wayuu community in La Guajira.

The charity estimates that more than 3,000 children have died from malnutrition and linked illnesses in La Guajira over the past eight years.

The gig at Los Andes Stadium saw Colombia’s Metallica fan club and Tecate Beer team up to create a giant statue of Doris – the Lady Justice figure on the cover of ‘… And Justice For All’. Midway through the band’s performance, Doris was unleashed into the audience and crowdsurfed.
