Slayer, Mastodon and Alice In Chains are among the seven big names added to the Sonisphere 2014 bill.

Also taking to the hallowed grounds of Knebworth on the weekend of Friday 4th to Sunday 6th July are Airbourne, Ghost, Gojira and Karnivool.

The freshly unveiled acts join the previously confirmed headliners The Prodigy, Iron Maiden and Metallica at the rock extravaganza.

Set to play tracks from their eagerly awaited sixth album at the festival, Mastodon said: “We are super excited to be playing Sonisphere Knebworth again!!! We had such a good time at the last one, this one will be even better!! We look forward to seeing you there!!”

Three years on from last storming Sonisphere as part of The Big Four, Slayer’s Kerry King enthused: “Great to be back at Sonisphere this year!! Always a giant party!!!”

Alice In Chains vocalist/guitarist William DuVall said of the band’s only UK festival appearance: “We're very excited to be playing once again at Sonisphere, particularly as this year has us joining our longtime friends in Metallica. It should be a fun ride for everyone - both on and off the stage.”

A Nameless Ghoul from Ghost said: “It is an honour to be playing at the unholy ground that is Knebworth, where so many classic rock concerts have taken place throughout the years.”

In a typically enthusiastic outpouring, Joel O’Keefe from Airbourne raved: “Us four guys are seriously fired up and chomping at the bit to bring the 'Black Dog Barking' Tour to Knebworth.

“We are deeply honored to have the green light for an Airbourne/Knebworth assault, to get out there on Knebworth's hallowed ground in front of that sea of heavy metal maniacs and give them every ounce of blood sweat and energy we got!”

Weekend tickets to Sonisphere are on sale from kerrangradio.co.uk/tickets right now. Don’t miss out!
