Marilyn Manson speaks about ‘excruciating’ stage crush and confirms broken leg
“It definitely could have crushed my skull and my ribs," he says
Marilyn Manson has spoken for the first time about being crushed on stage in New York last month.
The shock rock legend was performing his cover of Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)' at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday 30th September when a prop at the back of the stage - two large guns held together with metal scaffolding – fell on him.
After receiving treatment in hospital, Manson returned home to Los Angeles recuperate and cancelled a string of upcoming shows on the North American leg of The Heaven Upside Down Tour.
Now, in a fresh interview, Manson has spoken about the “excruciating” and “terrifying” incident and has confirmed that he has broken his fibula bone in his leg in two places.
Lying on a couch at his home with his leg in a plaster cast 11 days after the incident, Manson told Yahoo Music: “I only recently watched the video of it. I can see how it could look terrifying. It was terrifying for me, because the truss was not secured properly.”
Denying he was trying to scale the prop, he continued: “I wasn’t trying to climb it. It started to fall and I tried to push back and I didn’t get out the way in time. I’m not sure what I hit my head on, but it did fall onto my leg and break the fibula in two places. The pain was excruciating.”
According to Yahoo, doctors inserted a plate and 10 screws into the fibula bone, plus another screw through his ankle bone before encasing his leg in a cast.
Despite the injury, Manson says he’s thankful he didn’t come off worse: “It definitely could have crushed my skull and my ribs. I have some minor bruising in that area, but it took six guys to pull it off of me. It was like wrestling a giant iron monster.”
Manson admits the most frustrating part is undoubtedly not being able to perform live: “The thing that pisses me off most is that I’m not onstage, because that’s where I should be.
“And with a cast on my leg, it’s hard to talk about the excitement of the tour. It got cut off right as I was about to put it into second gear. But I’ll be back there really shortly and it’s going to be as exciting as it was starting out.”
The UK leg of Manson’s Heaven Upside Down Tour is due to kick off at Manchester Apollo on Monday 4th December before taking in shows in Glasgow, Wolverhampton, Newport and London. All shows are sold out.
